Burghers boost record to 6-2 overall

WARRENSBURG | Reclaiming their early-season mojo, the Warrensburg Boys Basketball team won three games against talented competitors. The trio of victories boosted the Burghers' season record to 6-2 overall, and 2-1 in the Adirondack League. On Dec. 12, the Burghers overwhelmed Hadley-Luzerne 67-27; and on Dec. 15 beat Fort Edward 38-33 in a defensive battle; then on the next evening, defeated scrappy, determined Crown Point by a score of 56-51. Steve Schloss demonstrated his consistency on offense over the week by being the top scorer for the Burghers in all three games. Against the Hadley-Luzerne Eagles, Schloss scored a game-high 25 points along with seven rebounds and three steals; teammate Brady Cheney followed with 15 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks; Evan LaPell contributed 12 points and eight rebounds; while Tyler Powers scored nine points and brought down four rebounds; and Caden Allen committed three steals. "Brady Cheney and Allen were fantastic on defense," Burghers coach Mike Perrone said. "Brady held their leading scorer to five points while Caden kept their second-leading scorer scoreless." Against Fort Edward, Schloss scored 19 points including three baskets from beyond the arc; Allen tallied 10 points and seven rebounds in the physical, competitive contest; LaPell grabbed 12 rebounds while scoring three points, and Cheney contributed 10 rebounds and two points, and Powers sank two baskets and executed a steal. Perrone praised LaPell and Allen for their tenacious defense which included forcing turnovers. Against Crown Point, Warrensburg led 49-37 by the end of the third quarter, but the Panthers slashed that lead to five points at the game's conclusion. Schloss was his team's top scorer with 19 points, trailing Crown Point's Trevor Harris by four points. Schloss was followed by LaPell with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Allen contributed 10 points and five rebounds. Cheney sank four field goals and grabbed seven rebounds, and sophomore Owen Jones added four rebounds and two points. Perrone praised his players for being tough despite competing merely 15 hours after the Fort Edward game. "It was a hard-fought win over a very good Crown Point team," he said, noting that Allen was pivotal to the win and Jones shined when called off the bench onto the floor. The Burghers totaled 10 steals — Cheney was credited with three; Jones, Schloss and LaPell executed two, and Allen had one. Perrone said the tough competition prepared them well for the Dec. 19 game against Lake George.
