Jbg.'s holiday events extend through December

NORTH CREEK | The lineup of Johnsburg's annual 'Lights On' holiday events has expanded this year, offering an intriguing variety of family-oriented activities planned to inspire seasonal cheer. The town's annual tree-lighting ceremony is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 in front of the Tannery Pond Community Center on Main Street. The event will feature the Johnsburg Pop Singers performing traditional holiday songs, and a non-denominational candlelight ceremony with area pastors offering inspirational thoughts. Also, Mrs. Claus and Gem Radio Theatre members will sing "Rockin' Round the Christmas Tree." All attending will be invited inside Tannery Pond Center, where children can visit with Santa while adults socialize. Light refreshments will be available. Meanwhile at the northern end of North Creek, a second town tree will be lit up across Main St. from The Phoenix Inn, and people can wander up to the Riverfront Park to see the North Creek train station, the Owens House, and the park's pavilion, all of which are to be adorned with animated lights and other decorations. Earlier on Dec. 2, the Johnsburg Library is holding a holiday-themed story hour from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for children 3 to 5 years old. Call the library at 518-251-4343 to confirm attendance. HOLIDAY KICKOFF: FESTIVE PARADE On Saturday, Dec. 2, Johnsburg's Christmas Parade is to be held at 11 a.m. featuring festive floats. The public is welcome to join the procession from the North Creek Firehouse and Johnsburg Central School, northward down Main Street, then over to Elderwood Center, where residents will be watching from their windows. Afterward, Parade participants and spectators will be returning to lower Main Street, where they can enjoy hot mulled cider and cookies at the Hungry Cow store. Mulled wine, samplings of spirits, and other refreshments will be offered at various local businesses in town, primarily from noon to 7 p.m. Dec. 2 starts off with a Breakfast with Santa from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the North Creek Firehall at 134 Main St. The meal is complete with pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon of sausage, and a gift for each child. Also featured on Dec. 2 is a gingerbread house holiday workshop from 11 a.m. until noon at the Johnsburg Library. Participants should call 518-251-4343 to register. There is a limit of one house per family. On Dec. 2 from noon to 2 p.m., children's holiday art will be on display at Tannery Pond Center. CRAFT FAIR, SKI SWAP SCHEDULED Also, a holiday craft fair featuring a variety of vendors is to be held at Johnsburg Central School from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. In addition, the annual Johnsburg Ski Swap event, which provides affordable skiing equipment for all ages, is to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 2 in the school's cafetorium. Proceeds benefit the local youth skiing programs. FREE HOLIDAY CONCERT SET On Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. at Tannery Pond Community Center, the North Country Singers, numbering several dozen, will perform their free annual holiday concert which will feature their choral selections with soloists, as well as a performance of the Guiding Steps Dancers. A festive reception follows. On Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., H'Art Studio & Gallery on Main Street will hold a workshop for children and adults to create holiday decorations and other craftworks. The session will be repeated on the following two Tuesdays. On Thursday, Dec. 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Johnsburg Library will be screening the holiday movie "Elf," followed by a discussion of the film. A week later, the library is to present the film "Miracle on 49th St., a holiday classic. Following the screening is a discussion. Call 518-251-4343 to reserve a seat. On Friday, Dec. 8 and Sunday, Dec. 10, H'Art Studio & Gallery on Main St. in North Creek will be holding a sale to benefit the Doctors Without Borders charity. LIGHTING UP THE TOWN Johnsburg's "Lights On" initiative, a tradition for 38-plus years, returns for winter 2023-24. In this initiative, local residents and merchants are encouraged to decorate their homes and businesses with lights, natural greenery and red bows — to celebrate the season and display community spirit. This Lights On effort features a contest with cash prizes. The town government is doing its part in this initiative by installing festive lighting the length of North Creek's Main Street. North Creek/Johnsburg community activist Laurie Arnheiter said Nov. 25 that Johnsburg's holiday events offer a welcome respite from the stress of daily life and the troubles of the world while strengthening bonds between the town's residents. "Lights On Johnsburg raises people's spirits as well as boosting pride in our community, particularly because people are volunteering out of love for our town," she said.
