Accident leaves one youth dead and three critically injured

CHAMPLAIN | An early morning accident has left three Northern Tier youth hospitalized with critical injuries and another mourned. Word of the Nov. 19 tragedy quickly spread as the Northern Tier community now rallies for the young students and families involved. New York State Police said the accident happened at about 2 a.m. Nov. 19 when first responders were notified of a vehicle on fire with possible entrapment on Depot Street. Police said a preliminary investigation revealed a 2011 Honda Ridgeline was traveling at a high rate of speed when the operator- a 14-year-old boy from Rouses Point- lost control on a curve in the roadway. The vehicle veered off the road and into multiple trees before coming to rest. Three passengers in the vehicle, a 14-year-old male from Mooers; a 12-year-old girl from Mooers, and a 13-year-old girl from Champlain were seriously injured. They were transported to CVPH hospital by Champlain/Mooers EMS and later transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center. All three were listed in critical but stable condition at the Vermont hospital Monday. The 14-year-old driver was pronounced deceased at the accident site. The investigation into the crash is ongoing as classmates, friends and families continue to reel in the shock of the tragedy. Extra support was on hand at Northeastern Clinton Central School District Monday as classes resumed and students somberly rallied for their classmates. Community members also commended first responders who rushed to the difficult call as they offered support to all involved. Condition updates and service details will be released in the coming days.
