$50M+ GSA funds boost NYS projects

WASHINGTON, D.C. | More than $50 million in federal funding from the General Services Administration (GSA) has been earmarked for federal building construction projects across New York State. From Albany to the North Country, this funding will enable local construction companies to use cleaner American-made construction materials to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change. This funding was made possible thanks to the investments Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer secured in the Inflation Reduction Act, which provided over $3 billion to the GSA to invest in federal building projects across the country that will help reduce carbon emissions and spur demand for the growing next-generation, low-carbon construction materials. "From the oldest building in Ogdensburg to the federal buildings that sit at the heart of downtown Albany and Utica, the Inflation Reduction Act is boosting construction projects with 'Made in the USA' materials, creating jobs, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the Empire State! That's a win-win-win," said Sen. Schumer. "This funding, alongside funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law and other IRA programs, are laying the foundation for long overdue construction projects, all while lowering carbon emissions and energizing the economy. With over $50 million secured through the Inflation Reduction Act, we are not just fixing aging buildings; we are building a sustainable future for New York." Schumer said the federal funding will go towards lower-carbon construction projects at 11 federal buildings across New York State. He explained that construction materials like asphalt, concrete, glass and steel are some of the most carbon-intensive parts of the construction process, accounting for nearly half of all U.S. manufacturing greenhouse gas emissions, and representing 98 percent of the construction materials purchased and funded by the government for its infrastructure investments. By increasing demand for low embodied carbon (LEC) materials, these investments will strengthen America's industrial base, drive market demand for this innovative in demand industry, all while supporting good paying construction jobs across New York. Two North Country projects receive funding Champlain: Champlain LPOE Cargo Building Asphalt & Concrete Pavement Repairs. $11,325,000 to repair and replace existing aging roads and parking areas using LEC asphalt, concrete, and steel. Rouses Point: Rouses Point Modernization. $8,500,000 for new construction of a land port of entry facility using LEC asphalt, concrete, glass, and steel. Schumer said that the Inflation Reduction Act provided $3.375 billion for the U.S. General Services Administration to invest in federal buildings to help reduce carbon emissions and catalyze innovation, primarily by acquiring and installing LEC materials for construction projects. Earlier this week, the GSA announced a $2 billion investment for more than 150 construction projects that use cleaner construction materials, known as "low-embodied carbon" materials. This investment from the Inflation Reduction Act will expand America's industrial capacity for manufacturing goods and materials of the future, tackle the climate crisis, and create good-paying jobs for American workers in communities across the country. The investment prioritizes the purchase of asphalt, concrete, glass and steel that have lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions associated with their production, use, and disposal.
