Hot Biscuit Diner to feed veterans for free

TICONDEROGA | According to Homeward Bound Adirondacks (HBA) Peer Specialist James Howard, one of the most meaningful and significant things you can do for a United States Military Veteran is simply say, "Thank you." That is why this Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Homeward Bound, in conjunction with the Hot Biscuit Diner in Ticonderoga, will be honoring veterans and one guest of their choosing with a free meal. "We have always counted it an honor to serve our area vets," said Val Dixon, co-owner of the Hot Biscuit. "This year Homeward Bound approached us to provide meals for our local vets and we were thrilled. The men and women of the military have provided us with a life of freedom and protection; we are so very grateful." The complimentary meal will include a choice of any menu item, a non-alcoholic beverage, and a dessert. Homeward Bound Adirondacks is a non-profit organization that works directly with veterans, performing non-clinical therapy, going on hikes, kayaking, and retreats multiple times a year. The organization provides veterans rides to medical and health appointments. HBA is also active in providing crisis outreach, suicide prevention, referral and linkage services to veterans in the community. "I think one of the hardest parts about being in the military is when veterans have been on multiple deployments; I have sergeants and friends that have been on four or five of them- I think it is too much to handle." According to Howard, less than one percent of the United States population serves in any branch of the military- Navy, Army, Air Force- and that he believes the Armed Services are short-staffed. "It is the toughest job to do in the world," he acknowledged. "It's not for everyone and not a lot of people make it through." Howard, who works one-on-one with veterans, said that many returning home suffer from PTSD, and/or have trouble acclimating back to civilian life. "It is an amazing thing to give back to Veterans in any way that we can and to show them our gratitude," Howard said. "I know that when I get thanked, it is a great feeling; it is a sense of pride. Veterans don't want to feel like their service was for nothing, and sometimes we do feel that way; we get pulled out of the war we were in, and there was never a conclusion.
