PHS edges Peru on penalty kicks to win Class A final

CHAMPLAIN | Nick Clookey's dramatic save in the eighth round of penalty kicks supplied Plattsburgh High with the Section VII Class A boys soccer championship and state playoff berth. Plattsburgh High and Peru ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes, but Plattsburgh High held the decisive 7-6 advantage in penalties, with Chase Laravia booting in the go-ahead penalty on Thursday, Oct. 26, at Northeastern Clinton. Plattsburgh High, which won the Class B title a year ago, will face the Section X representative in a NYSPHSAA sub-regional at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Northeastern Clinton. Clookey lunged to his right on the penalty save. "It's that killer instinct," Clookey said. "We practice penalties every day, and I just went the right way this time." Plattsburgh High overcame a 1-0 hole with 18:55 remaining, when Andrew Bula converted on a feed from Nate Lambert. "You know, they counted us out at the beginning of the season, and these boys worked so hard," Clookey said. "We didn't quit the entire time, and the boys stayed with it. Just played hard, and we were able to get one in the back of the net." Peru led for most of the match, as it opened the scoring with only 7 minutes, 33 seconds gone. Seanen Edwards made a great individual play by creating separation from a defender just outside the 6-yard box and poking home a shot. Conner Perrotte kept Peru alive with multiple clutch saves in the overtime periods, and he saved Plattsburgh High's second-round penalty. Plattsburgh High's sectional championship was its 18th in program history but first outside of the B classification.
