Wacky shot gives B-W girls top league ranking

BOLTON LANDING | An atypical deflection ended a scoring drought in an Oct. 3 game featuring tough defense of longtime rivals Bolton-Warrensburg and Lake George soccer teams— and the B-W crew was the beneficiary of the goal which gained them the No. 1 seed in Adirondack League playoffs. About 22 minutes into the game, junior Madison Goodspeed dribbled the ball down the left side of the field and took a shot at the goal which was rebuffed by Lake George senior goaltender Alex Cavalier. Following an ensuing fight for possession in front of the net, the ball was kicked out about 20 feet to senior Ila Hubert who took a shot on goal, and teammate Avril LaFountain, a junior, deflected it with her hip past Cavalier into the net. B-W Coach Scott Smith said Oct. 6 he's told his players to utilize any kind of opportunity to score and to be keenly aware of unpredictable redirected shots and abnormal spins of the ball. "There are so many variables that can come into play," he said. For the remaining 58 minutes of the game, Lake George's defense kept Bolton-Warrensburg from scoring, while B-W's defense contained the Lakers. Smith praised his defenders — including junior Zailey Baker, sophomores Caitlin O'Donnell and Maille Kelley and freshman Hannah Daken — for their persistence, praising Daken for stepping up her game in the second half. He also noted that Lakers' sophomore center defender Morgan Sanco also played well, keeping B-W away from their goal. The victory was the 2023 season's ninth shutout for B-W goalie Hope Sherman, who holds the merged program's record for career shutouts. The team has given up only one goal in the last 10 games. As of Oct. 7, Bolton-Warrensburg was scheduled to play the Lakers again Oct. 11 in the Adirondack League championship semifinals, and the winner will play the victor of the other league semifinal game — between Fort Ann and Hadley-Luzerne — in the league championship finals set for Saturday, Oct. 14 at a neutral site. Smith said the win over Lake George not only secured their top spot in the Adirondack League but is also likely to give the B-W team a more favorable seeding in the Section II tournament. "Our athletes have really played well so far this season," he said, noting that he was proud of their accomplishments.
