Bolton-Wbg boys shutout two league rivals

BOLTON LANDING | This last week, the Bolton-Warrensburg Boys Soccer team took on two rivals, Argyle and Corinth, who were unbeaten in the Adirondack League, and defeated them both in shutouts to advance into a leadership role in the league. Following the two games, B-W boys soccer coach Rob Thomas said he was pleasantly surprised about what his 2023 team had accomplished so far, considering the loss of 10 players to graduation in June. "I was hopeful this was where we would be, but what our guys have now achieved is a little unexpected," he said. Thomas said his team has combined a tenacious defense and aggressive offense to get them this far. But most of all, he said, it is his players' mental strength that has led to their success. "On defense, they've kept their composure under pressure and not become rattled, and on offense, they've pounced on opportunities," Thomas said. Against Argyle on Sept. 25, senior fullback Tanner Monroe's goal halfway through the second half broke what had been an hour-long stalemate. Soon after, sophomore fullback Andrew Morehouse and junior halfback Ben Holcomb scored successive goals in the game's final 10 minutes, while the B-W defenders and goaltender Keith Sonley kept the Scots from scoring. BOLTON-WBG. BOYS UPSET CORINTH On Sept. 27, Bolton-Warrensburg boys avenged an early-season loss with a 2-0 upset victory over the previously unbeaten Corinth Riverhawks. Nearly 10 minutes into the match, Louis Lang lit up the scoreboard with a surgical strike that landed in an upper corner of the net, coach Rob Thomas said. Then about 45 minutes later, Lang redirected a Shane Mowery kick into the net to advance the score to 2-0. Corinth executed numerous drives that were repeatedly rebuffed by B-W defenders Sullivan Eager, Tanner Monroe, Tyler Trowbridge, and Colton Bell. With the decisive win, B-W goaltender Keith Sonley tallied his sixth straight shutout, and his team boosted their record to 7-1 in the Adirondack League and 7-1-1 overall. Thomas and the game's spectators honored the team's seniors Monroe, Trowbridge, and Bell, as it was Seniors Night for the merged team. The first game of the current week was scheduled to be played on Oct. 2 against Granville at home, followed by a game at North Warren on Oct. 4, then a matchup at home Friday, Oct. 6 against Lake George. On Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 8 the B-W boys are to compete in the Old Forge Soccer Tournament, followed by an away game against Fort Ann on Oct. 11. On Friday, Oct. 13, the Adirondack League East and West division leaders play each other for the Adirondack League Championship.
