B-W girls win two more key games

BOLTON LANDING | The Bolton-Warrensburg girls soccer team remained unbeaten for 2023 this past week as they defeated two solid Adirondack League competitors. Their accomplishment secured the top position in the league (6-0-1) as they headed toward a showdown Tuesday, Oct. 3 with challenger Lake George (5-1). Whichever team wins this game determines the No. 1 seed for the Adirondack League playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 10. The B-W girls' first matchup last week occurred Sept. 26 against Hadley-Luzerne, which came into the game with only one league loss during the season. The B-W girls controlled the ball well over the first 15 minutes, but a team miscommunication soon after allowed Hadley-Luzerne to score a goal, leading to a 0-1 deficit for the B-W squad at halftime. But 35 seconds into the second half, B-W junior midfielder Elli York took a shot that was blocked, but junior midfielder/forward Megan Langworthy was there for the rebound, and she kicked it into the net to tie the score. Just over a minute later, Langworthy retrieved a loose ball on the right side of the field and kicked it up and over the head of the goaltender for the game-winning goal. For the remainder of the game, Bolton-Warrensburg's defense prevented Hadley-Luzerne from scoring. Coach Scott Smith praised his team members for their resilience and determination, and he voiced a special commendation for Zailey Baker, who defended the Eagles' top offensive star Carolina Watts-Diamond, keeping her from scoring a goal. As the game was Seniors Night, record-setting B-W goalie Hope Sherman and midfielder-defender Ila Hubert , both due to graduate in June 2024, were recognized by spectators, coaches and teammates. Bolton-Wbg. 1, Corinth 0 Two days later, the B-W team took on Corinth in an away game that featured tough defense on both sides. With about 14 minutes remaining in the game, Hubert scored on a direct kick from left-center field about 25 yards away from the net, and the ball sailed between the Riverhawks' goaltender and the near post. After the game against Lake George, the B-W girls are to compete in the Old Forge Soccer Tournament on both Saturday, Oct. 7, and Sunday, Oct. 8. On Oct. 29, Smith praised his team for winning two tough games in a row. "I'm pleased with how they persevered under pressure," he said.
