New Sentinel mascot named

TICONDEROGA | The results are in. After a competition to give the new Sentinel mascot a proper and befitting moniker, the 18th-century figure finally has a name to call his own- Ty the Sentinel. According to Maria Bagneschi, Ti High Special Education Teacher, voting took place on Wednesday, Sept. 20 during Spirit Week. PreK-6th grade students voted in their class and 7-12th grade students voted in their social studies class. All district staff (teachers, administrators, maintenance, cafeteria, bus drivers, etc) and School Board members also voted. The new mascot, with the head constructed of a plastic composite and a coat that weighs a few pounds, arrived in Ticonderoga at the end of the summer and was unveiled at the Aug. 30 Fall Sports Kick-Off BBQ hosted by the Booster Club. "A committee narrowed the list down to five name considerations," Bagneschi said. "Captain T, Howie, Scout, Sergeant, and Ty." With over 50 nominations submitted by students, staff and community members on the Booster Club Facebook page, a total of 767 votes were cast and 'Ty' was the winner by a 40 vote margin. The winning name was announced on Friday, Sept. 22 as part of Purple and White Day. Ty marched through the Elementary School with Ti High senior athletes and Dan Dorsett, Athletic Director. Ty also made an appearance at the Jr/Sr HS Pep Rally. "The Elementary School students seemed very excited to vote and like seeing Ty at various school events," Bagneschi said. "The older students seem more interested in finding out who is inside."
