Soccer: Bolton-Wbg. girls tally four straight shutouts

BOLTON LANDING | The Bolton-Warrensburg girls soccer team achieved four consecutive shutouts this last week with Hope Sherman defending the goal. The latest game, a 7-0 win Sept. 14 over Salem, was a landmark for Sherman and her team, as she earned second place on the soccer program's all-time shutout tally. Against Salem, Zailey Baker, Hannah Daken, Halley LaBrecque, Caitlin O'Donnell, and Maille Kelley all played well on defense, coach Scott Smith said. Leading the offensive charge was Avah Fiorentino who scored four goals for B-W. Also, Elli York scored twice and Megan Langworthy had a goal. York, Ila Hubert, and Madison Goodspeed all contributed assists. Bolton-Warrensburg improved to 3-0 in the Adirondack League and 4-2 overall. On Sept. 12, B-W scored three times in the first seven minutes and cruised to a 14-0 league win over North Warren. Daken assisted defenders Kelley, O'Donnell, Baker, and LaBrecque in the win. Eight B-W players scored goals, including O'Donnell and Ava Millington who attained their first-ever varsity goals. North Warren competed hard all night, Smith said. Cougar goalie Jessica Paul made several dramatic stops in goal and finished with 24 saves. Addison Swan played well in the middle of the field for North Warren, Smith added. On Sept. 9, Bolton-Warrensburg battled Class A Glens Falls and won 3-0. B-W struck first when Langworthy's corner kick was booted into the net by senior Ila Hubert. That was the only goal of the first half. Hailey Goodspeed's two second-half goals gave B-W the 3-0 win. Madison Goodspeed and York assisted on the two goals in the second half. Defensively, Sherman made a few key saves in goal, while Sophia Fiorentino, O'Donnell, Daken, and LaBrecque did their part in keeping the ball away from the net. Maille, Kelley, and Hubert controlled the middle of the field, Smith said. Bolton-Warrensburg opened up league play Sept. 5 with a 10-0 win over Granville. Madison Goodspeed scored three goals while York and Hailey Goodspeed scored two each. Scoring one goal were Sophia Fiorentino, Kelley, and Danica Staepel. Assisting the scorers were Langworthy, LaBrecque, Avril LaFountain, Hailey Goodspeed, Baker, and Kelley. Coach Smith praised his defense of Daken, Fiorentino, O'Donnell and Kelley for securing the shutout. While Sherman recorded three saves in goal, two Glens Falls goalies tallied a total of 14 saves.
