Schlitt, Peru turn back Beekmantown

WEST CHAZY | Sawyer Schlitt rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns, and Peru scored 20 unanswered points in its 33-17 comeback win over Beekmantown in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference football on Friday, Sept. 8. Schlitt reached the end zone twice in the final 2 minutes, 31 seconds of the third quarter to give the Nighthawks (2-0, 1-0) a two-score lead. Peru recovered an Eagles (0-2, 0-1) fumble at Beekmantown's 16-yard line, and four plays later, Schlitt reached the end zone from the 1-yard line. On the ensuing series, the Nighthawks' defense forced a turnover on downs, and Schlitt rewarded his teammates with a 78-yard touchdown run. Landen Duprey's pick-six, an 85-yard return, as time expired put an exclamation point on the win. "That (fumble) was huge because it was a short field, and short fields are big," Peru coach Ryon O'Connell said. "Sawyer took the next hand-off to the house, and when he went through that hole, he wasn't touched. "(The) offensive line had a beautiful block there, and he made one cut." Schlitt was responsible for the game's first touchdown, a 75-yard catch as time expired in the first quarter. The junior finished with 244 all-purpose yards. "Yeah, honestly, I think what really helped was just how my (linemen) really held those blocks, even though they may have thought the play was over, they just kept pushing, and that really opened up a lot of holes for me," Schlitt said. The Eagles took their final lead with 7:32 left in the third quarter, when Nathan Parliament raced 49 yards to the end zone. The senior quarterback accounted for 308 total yards — 261 through the air and 47 on the ground. Zach Lapier hauled in three catches for 113 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown reception, and Louis Sweenor rolled up 99 yards on 14 carries. The game featured an unprecedented 117 plays from scrimmage and 770 yards.
