Albany man killed in Plattsburgh hit-and-run

PLATTSBURGH | An Albany man is facing a murder charge following a truck stop hit and run that claimed the life of an Albany man and prompted a multi-county search. New York State Police and Clinton County Sheriff's officials were called to the Exit 36 truck stop at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday for reports of someone hit by a vehicle in the parking lot. When troopers arrived, they found Wayne H. Haupt, 53, of Albany with severe injuries- struck by a vehicle that fled the area. Haupt was transported by ambulance to The University of Vermont Health Network at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) where he later succumbed to his injuries. With eyewitness accounts, police put out an immediate description of the vehicle, which was located by State Police in Tupper Lake a short time later. Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, but a pursuit ensued, ultimately ending in Long Lake where the driver, Thomas E. Lance, 38, of Albany, was taken into custody without incident. Lance was arrested on one count of second-degree murder and was arraigned in the City of Plattsburgh Court. He has since been remanded to Clinton County Jail without bail. An autopsy will be conducted at Glens Falls Hospital by pathologist Dr. Michael Sikirica Friday, Sept. 8. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact State Police at 518-563-3761. The case remains under investigation by the State Police and the Clinton County District Attorney's Office.
