Bolton-Wbg. Girls Soccer squad seeks to extend 2022's success

BOLTON LANDING | After an eminent 2022 post-season, the Bolton-Warrensburg Varsity Girls Soccer team aims to continue such success. Last October, the team won the Adirondack League Championship and then battled into the Section II Class C semifinals. The 2022 team had a wealth of talent, including seniors All-State soccer player Ella Moskov and standouts Kara and Kailey Bacon and Karla Sherman, all of whom have graduated. However, this year's team has experienced players ready to take on their leading roles, coach Scott Smith said. "Our team is eager to pick up where the 2022 players left off," he said, adding that of the 2023 team's 17 players, 13 of them all experienced significant time competing last year. Leading the squad will be senior midfielder Ila Hubert, and goalie Hope Sherman, who is on pace to break the two schools' all-time shutout record. They serve as the 2023 team's co-captains. "Hope has great instincts for the ball, is a good leader, and will help anchor our defense," Smith said. "Ila is great at winning the ball in the air, can distribute the ball well to our forwards, and has a great shot on goal when left open." Hubert will likely be controlling midfield action, he added. Offensively, the team will be led by juniors Madison Goodspeed and Zailey Baker as well as sophomores Hailey Goodspeed and Avah Fiorentino. "All of them bring speed and athleticism to the field and will need to replace the scoring we lost to graduation," Smith continued. Returning midfielders Eli York, Halley LaBrecque, Avril LaFountain, and Megan Langworthy have all improved in the off-season, Smith said, noting they will be vital to the team's success. "Defensively, we will be young but solid on our back line," he said. Returning on defense this year are sophomores Maille Kelley, Caitlin O'Donnell, Sophia Fiorentino and varsity newcomer freshman Hannah Daken. "All four have shown the ability to work well together and will need to play tough and physical all season for us to be successful," he said. Varsity rookies Ava Millington, Chloe Rumble, and Danica Staepel will be contributing to the team's 2023 campaign, Smith said, noting that all of his athletes have demonstrated a solid work ethic so far this season. "We are looking forward to the challenges that come our way, and are excited to try to defend our Adirondack League Championship in 2023," Smith concluded.
