Town hires new Recreation Supervisor

TICONDEROGA | James Chauncey is looking forward to getting to know the children and families in his brand-new home of Ticonderoga. As the recently hired Recreation Supervisor for the town, he certainly will have that opportunity in spades. "Growing up, a big portion of my family life revolved around athletics and any other program that gave back to the community," Chauncey said. "Having these programs for kids, especially when we do not have as much interest nowadays, is so important. Sports teach children how to be part of a team and learn how to compete and good sportsmanship, which are both aspects of life you really need to learn at an early age." Chauncey brings with him to the position, which he officially began July 24, a Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Administration from Keene University. After graduating, he served as Recreation Assistant in his hometown of Bloomfield, N.J., and from there moved on to become Area Director for the Boys' and Girls' Club in Rutland, Vt., where he ran multiple sites for two years. He has relocated to Ticonderoga full-time in dedication to his career. "We are very fortunate to have found James and are thrilled to add him to our team," said Ticonderoga Town Supervisor Mark Wright. "His experience and refreshing "hit the ground running" attitude will bring more organization, structure, and success to the town's recreational program." In his new role, Chauncey will be in charge of scheduling the town's athletic programs, working with other neighboring towns on setting up and scheduling events, scheduling practices, and making sure supplies and equipment are available. Chauncey will be ensuring the youth program is running smoothly and dealing with any issues that may arise, while also managing the Armory and scheduling events there as well as the booking and use of the gym. "I want to create a more rounded athletics program," he said. "I want to bring what I learned and achieved at the Boys and Girls Club to this program. I want more stability, and it will be a different set of rules that kids and parents will have to abide by. This will be an overall fun atmosphere for kids." One of Chauncey's major goals as he takes the helm is the After-School Program, which would normally begin as soon as the school year commenced. However, much like it was for the Summer Youth Program this year, finding teenagers to employ has posed a problem. For the After-School Program, Chauncey is seeking high school students 16 years and older who are available from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. after the school day has concluded. "They would be working closely with children and running programs I have set up, participating in the activities for the day, clean up, dealing one-on-one with children, as well as dealing with groups of children," Chauncey explained, adding that experience working within an after-school program looks great on college applications. Pay is $14.20 per hour and runs the duration of the entire school year. Chauncey is also seeking adults over 18 for the After-School Program. Interested parties are encouraged to fill out applications on-site at the Ticonderoga Community Building. "Skilled talent like James and our funding efforts are important pieces to our youth program, but equally important are community members coming forward as summer counselors, cooks, lifeguards, and after-school attendants," reminded Supervisor Wright.
