14-year-old Kailey's equestrian wish comes true

LAKE PLACID | 14-year-old Kailey Paul from West Sand Lake thought she was just on a family vacation when she walked into the Lake Placid Horse Show grounds June 30. But her parents secretly had other plans. As she and her family walked by the equestrian-wear brand Charles Ancona booth, Senior Manager of Wish Granting for Make-A-Wish Northeast New York Scott Liloia walked into her line of sight. Charles Ancona himself also walked out and they surprised her with the news: she is going to receive a custom jacket fitting with the designer. She was having her Make-A-Wish wish for equestrian riding equipment fulfilled. "I always dreamed of this but I never thought it would actually happen," Paul said. "This is just amazing. I am still in shock." Paul finished chemotherapy and radiation for a brain tumor in early May. She also just finished ninth grade with honors. She said riding horses has helped her during the treatment because it relaxes her. Paul has been riding horses since she was four years old. "My mom says I came out of the womb saying "horse," Paul said. Make-A-Wish also gave her two complimentary nights at the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa, behind-the-scenes tours, Lake Placid Horse Show merchandise, a riding lesson and more. She also got to meet one of her favorite equestrians, John French. He is one of the most accomplished hunter-riders in the sport. "I aspire to be like you," Paul said. "Well, you probably will be," French answered.
