Ewing named president of NYSAFC

TOWN OF PLATTSBURGH | Plattsburgh District 3 Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief R. Scott Ewing has been named president of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC). The installation was announced at the organization's 117th Annual Conference in Syracuse. Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman attended the ceremony. "It was an honor and a privilege to be in attendance at his formal Installation Ceremony and be asked to swear him in as he takes on this new role," Cashman said via email. "Of note, he is only the second person from Clinton County to serve in this role and the first member of any fire department from the Town of Plattsburgh. "Chief Ewing's dedication to emergency services is most laudable. He approaches this work with unparalleled passion and professionalism. He is a tremendous ambassador for our community and the North Country." Ewing's leadership role at New York's largest fire chiefs' association brings decades of service in this region. Ewing has served with, managed and led fire companies for 38 years. Currently deputy chief of Plattsburgh's District 3, he served as chief from 2015 to 2020. He joined the department in 1985 and previously held the positions of department secretary, vice president, president, and assistant chief. He has served as a deputy fire coordinator for Clinton County since 1994 and is assigned to the Fire Investigation Unit as a fire investigator. Training over the years led Ewing to hazmat and emergency ambulance response leadership roles. Ewing is a certified hazardous materials technician and serves on the Clinton County Hazmat Team. In 2002, he was appointed to the Clinton County Training Tower Committee and assisted in the development, plans, funding, and construction of the new facility, which is utilized by departments throughout Clinton County and Canada. Ewing was appointed to the Clinton County Fire Advisory Board in 2016 and is still serving as an active member. He is a member and past president of the Clinton County Firefighters Association. Ewing is a certified emergency medical technician (EMT). He has been a member of the Morrisonville-Schuyler Falls Ambulance Service since 1995, having served as the EMS chief for five years and president of the board of directors for 12 years. Ewing is also a New York state fire instructor. He joined NYSAFC in 1986 and is a life member. Prior to being elected to the board of directors in 2014, Ewing was appointed to the Public Education Committee in 1996 and was named chairman in 2002. NYSAFC represents over 10,000 members with career and volunteer fire chiefs, company officers, commissioners, and emergency services personnel of all ranks from across New York. The Town of Plattsburgh issued a formal proclamation recognizing Ewing's leadership and commitment to his community. "Chief Ewing's unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership, and numerous accomplishments have earned him the esteemed position of President of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, a position that reflects his outstanding reputation and indispensable contributions to the firefighting community," it said. "The Town of Plattsburgh Town Board wishes to congratulate Chief Ewing on being elected President of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) and would like to thank him for his years of service to the Town of Plattsburgh and Clinton County. "The Town Board encourages residents to recognize the positive impact of service to our Town by thanking those who serve and find ways to give back to their communities as Chief Ewing has."
