UPDATED: Student stabbed at Saranac Middle School

SARANAC | An altercation between two students at the Saranac Middle School ordered students to shelter in place shortly after noon June 21. "Today we had a serious altercation between two middle school students. One student assaulted another student, causing a significant injury," the district said in an email on Wednesday. "The student who caused the assault was immediately isolated by our school staff and administration. Law enforcement and emergency services were immediately called and responded promptly." New York State Police reported that at approximately 12:13 p.m., June 21, troopers responded to a report of a student assaulting another student. "An investigation determined a 12-year-old juvenile stabbed a 13-year-old juvenile. Both the suspect and victim are students of Saranac Middle School. The victim was stabbed one time in the upper back." He was transported to the University of Vermont — Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, but later transported to The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vt., due to a punctured lung, police said. "The victim is in stable condition and did not sustain any life-threatening injuries," said police. The suspect was arrested and transported to State Police barracks in Plattsburgh for processing. He was charged with first-degree attempted assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The suspect was issued a Family Court appearance ticket and released to parental custody, according to the police report. Superintendent Javier Perez said, "All other students remained safe and did a great job cooperating during this stressful situation. Our student body was placed in a shelter in place while the injured student was treated and law enforcement was able to enter and assess our situation." He assured parents that students not involved in the altercation were safe and out of harm's way. Dismissal occurred at the routine time, 3 p.m. The middle school has approximately 340 students in grades 6 to 8, primarily ages 11 to 13.
