NCCS senior Minerva Gelineault wins Mayor's Cup logo competition

PLATTSBURGH | The richly colored work of Champlain Valley Educational Services (CV-TEC) student designer Minerva Gelineault was selected the top winner from among 60 student entries to emblazon official Mayor's Cup Regatta & Festival 2023 T-shirts. A high honors senior at Northeastern Clinton Central School (NCCS), Minerva attends the CV-TEC Digital Production and Multimedia Communications program, which organized student entries. She plus nine students in the top-10 design winners circle met with Plattsburgh Sunrise Rotary Club members, City of Plattsburgh Mayor Christopher Rosenquest, CVES Superintendent Dr. Mark Davey and Mayor's Cup Festival Chair Sue LeBlanc-Durocher on Monday, June 12, to mark the logo's launch. Minerva's work will appear on T-shirts and promotional materials for the 2023 Mayor's Cup Regatta & Festival set for July 8. Along with the NCCS senior, students honored in the top 10 design circle were: April Meseck, Northeastern Clinton Central; Abigail Smith, Keene Central School; Timothy Quaid, Adult Learning; Alex Deso, Beekmantown Central; Zaedyn Carpenter, Northeastern Clinton Central; Gavin Parker, Northeastern Clinton Central; Haylie Snyder, Plattsburgh High School; Kayleigh Tuttle, Northeastern Clinton Central; and Waylon Brown, Beekmantown Central. STUDENT TALENT This is the second year that Sunrise Rotary, CV-TEC and the City of Plattsburgh have collaborated to provide a design platform, allowing students' work to shine in the Mayor's Cup celebration. Minerva's illustration of a sailboat riding fanciful waves under swirls of wind incorporates the Sunrise Rotary insignia and Mayor's Cup 2023 title. Design specifications were part of the project. "This is our second year working with CV-TEC on the logo contest and we were once again in awe of the designs that were submitted," LeBlanc-Durocher said after the event. "The students are clearly talented, and they took the contest very seriously, submitting very creative and professional designs." Mayor Rosenquest said the collaboration between the school, the city and Sunrise Rotary Club offers opportunity for youth to engage their talents and abilities for professional exposure. "Partnership between Sunrise Rotary and the City of Plattsburgh and CV-TEC is the exactly the kind of partnership that helps our community grow," Rosenquest said in a phone interview. "The impressive part about what Sunrise Rotary has done in working with CV-TEC is to engage our young people and highlight their talents." The project did draw immense interest from area students who are enrolled in the CV-TEC Multimedia Communications program. Mayor's Cup spokeswoman Joanne Dahlen said the artistry was amazing. Every design had to incorporate the Rotary insignia and the Mayor's Cup 2023 date into a sailing and lake theme. "There were 60 submissions that were then reduced to 10 finalists, of which Minerva was the top finalist. Next year we are going to do this contest earlier and feature the students' work as designers. Working with CV-TEC, creating partnerships and providing kids with real life experience is a win-win for everyone," Dahlen said. "Look at the publicity they're getting. Look at what we're getting: This is wonderful artwork! What a wonderful tie-in with a community event and our celebration on the lake." At CVES, District Superintendent Dr. Mark Davey said the opportunity for students is invaluable. "CVES and CV-TEC pride themselves on creating real-world opportunities for our students to utilize the skills-sets they gain within their CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs. We are thrilled to partner with the Plattsburgh Sunrise Rotary and the City of Plattsburgh. The 2023 Mayor's Cup Logo Challenge brings out the best in our students and teachers.
