Dannemora teen hospitalized after UTV wreck

CADYVILLE | An afternoon Memorial Day ride turned to tragedy earlier this week, leaving one teen injured and another hospitalized with serious injuries as the local community now rallies with support. New York State Police said the two 15-year-olds were riding in a side-by-side on an ATV trail off Trudeau Road at about 4:40 p.m. Monday when the driver lost control and crashed into trees. Authorities said the teen passenger from Cadyville, who suffered non-life-threatening head and shoulder injuries, was able to get the pair help, bringing police and first responders rushing to their aid. The other 15-year-old- identified by loved ones as Saranac Central athlete Donavyn Smith- was critically injured in the May 29 crash and was rushed by helicopter to the University of Vermont Medical Center. He remained in critical condition Friday, police said. The passenger was treated at CVPH Medical Center and continues to recover. Both teens were wearing seatbelts but did not have protective headgear at the time of the crash, police said. A GoFundMe fundraiser launched in the hours after the accident said Smith, a Saranac Central football player and wrestler, suffered severe head trauma with a fractured skull and other injuries requiring immediate surgeries and a lengthy hospitalization and road to recovery ahead. The Section VII wrestling community quickly rallied support alongside friends and loved ones, raising nearly $2,000 in less than 24 hours to assist with medical expenses and travel for his family. By Friday, the online fundraiser had raised more than $3,000 to help with the immediate needs.
