Second season underway in baseball

PLATTSBURGH | The 2023 baseball season has come down to the playoffs, with the Class D finalists set while Class B held their opening round May 18. Class D Blue Bombers advance past Wild Eagles PJ Colby allowed only two hits, throwing a complete game and sending Lake Placid into the Class D sectional finals in a 14-0 win over Bolton/Schroon Lake May 20. "Another (Isaiah) Pelkey/Colby pitcher's duel," said Blue Bombers coach Brian Brandes. "Colby kept the Wild Eagles in check most of the game. Schroon/Bolton was able to get a runner on base every inning, but combinations of timely strikeouts by Colby (13 total) and good defense kept the Wild Eagles out of the scoring column. "The Blue Bombers managed one run through the first two innings, then were able to plate four runs in the third started by PJ Colby's double, followed by two runs in the fifth and seven runs in the sixth. Lake Placid's Jon Caito and Vann Morelli led the Bombers with three hits apiece." Sully Eager, Carter Hart and Jace Hubert relieved for the Wild Eagles, who got to the sectional semifinals with a 17-1 win over Boquet Valley May 17, as Pelkey was near perfect for five innings while driving in four Bolton/Schroon Lake runs across the plate. Pelkey had a pair of doubles and a triple at the plate while striking out 10 and allowing only one hit and another batter to reach on an error over five innings of work. His 10 strikeouts came in the span of 13 batters. Wyatt Carniglia was 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two, while Sullivan Eager has a pair of doubles, scoring on both hits while driving in two. Corbin Baker added an RBI double for the Wild Eagles, with Tyler Trowbridge connecting on a single and Stas Witorko driving a run in on a bases-loaded walk. For Boquet Valley, Ben Burdo scored off a walk, two stolen bases and a wild pitch, while Nathan Petit had the lone Griffin hit in the fifth inning. Panthers advance The defending state semifinalists also advanced to the Class D finals with a 12-7 win over Chazy May 20. No other information was provided to the Sun. Chazy scored a 12-5 win over Johnsburg/Minerva in the quarterfinal round May 17. While scoring the win on the mound with eight strikeouts, Elijah Valentin had a trio of hits at the plate for the Eagles, while Reagan Dudyak, Caden Columbus, and Kobe Hernandez (double) each had two hits. Brayden Poirier had two hits for the Irish Jaguars, while Jeremiah Freeman added a triple. Evan Wing struck out six batter in taking the loss. Class B Eagles finish two-day sweep of Chiefs A day after scoring an 8-7 walkoff win over Saranac to finish the CVAC regular season, Beekmantown had an easier time getting past the Chiefs in the Class B quarterfinal round, scoring a 12-2 win May 18. "We had good pitching from Steve Bronson and Alex Perras tonight and were able to score some early runs to get things started," said Eagles coach Dave Manney. "Quinn Brandell was hot at the plate with four hits while Steve Bronson and Cole Ely added three hits a piece. Sam Bingel chipped in with two hits while Rylan Garden also had two hits with one of them being his first varsity home run. This was a great team win for us." Bronson (win, 10 strikeouts) and Perras (save) combined to allow only four hits to the Chiefs by Austin Barnes, Logan Lucia, Ben Yanulavich, and Seth Petrashune. Red Storm advance Saranac Lake scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put away the AuSable Valley Patriots by a final score of 15-3 in the Class B quarterfinal round May 18. Peru and Plattsburgh High were the respective top two seeds in the playoffs, with the championship game set for Thursday, May 25, at Chip Cummings Field on Plattsburgh State University.
