Loon Center's mascot needs a name

SARANAC LAKE | The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (ACLC) just enhanced its storefront headquarters on Main Street with a larger-than-life-sized sculpture of a loon standing proudly over its nest. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of North Country School students, teacher Larry Robjent (of Robjent Sculptures), and Matt Woodruff (who powder-coated the piece prior to painting), the scrap-metal loon has now established its permanent nesting site just over the Center's door. Using found objects like golf balls (perfect for the loon's eyes) and maple sap can lids welded to other pieces of scrap metal, this bird symbolizes ACLC's mission with succinct elegance. "We're thrilled to have this amazing bird welcome our visitors to the Loon Center," said Dr. Nina Schoch, Director of the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation. "We're looking forward to sharing the story of this wonderful addition to Saranac Lake to inspire people to learn more about loons and the lakes where they live." If the ACLC's loon looks familiar, it may be because Larry Robjent and his students have created other sculptures shown around town, including "Tessie the Lawn Serpent," on Woodruff Street, and "The Bug Crawl," a series of insects crawling on various buildings around the village. "It's awesome having the kids connect with local businesses and endeavors, and to be able to create a lasting additive feature to a great organization," said Robjent. "It was a wonderful project to work on, and the kids had a blast working through the design challenges." Though this loon has a forever home, it now needs a forever name, and the Loon Center is holding a contest to do just that. Online visitors can cast their votes for "Claire de Loon," "Luna the Loon," or "Looney." Write-in names will also be accepted.
