Warrensburg High to present musical 'Chicago'

WARRENSBURG | Dozens of Warrensburg High School students have committed 100 hours or more of their time since January rehearsing songs and as well as their practicing dialogue for the school's annual musical, and the work will culminate soon as the Warrensburg Drama Club presents a family-oriented, condensed version of the musical "Chicago." The show is to be presented in three 7 p.m. performances on Thursday, March 30, Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1. Warrensburg High School Choral Music Instructor Jim Corriveau, who directed the past 23 drama productions at the school, is retiring in June and has turned over his traditional role to co-directors WCS Science instructor Damaris Martinez and Social Studies teacher Christian Bruce. "Chicago" will be the second dramatic production hosted in Warrensburg High School's auditorium, which features professional-grade acoustics, lighting and sound system — as well as tiered seating. Chicago, which made its debut in 1975, is based on a 1926 play by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, about real-life criminals and the crimes on which she reported. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, according to Wikipedia. The original Broadway production ran for more than two years and had an encore run in the Manhattan Theatre District in its 1996 revival which lasted more than 18 years. The Broadway production is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. The lead characters in the Warrensburg Drama Club production include Lily Joseph as Roxie Hart, Lauryn Constantineau as Mary Sunshine and Annie, Summer Krom as June, Francesca Lang as Velma Kelly, Ben McKeever as Amos Hart and two other characters, Paige Eaton as Mama Morton, Mya Rumble as Kitty, and Ty Brown as Billy Flynn. The stage crew includes Dennis Galusha, Daisean Thomas, and Dakota Ackley. Assisting Martinez and Bruce in the production are Kadenza Lashway, Michael Dittmer, and Nichole Carlozzi. The set was designed and built by the students of Greg Soresino, a Technology instructor at Warrensburg High School. The jail cells for the set were built by Brian Constantineau. Tickets are $10 each and are for sale online at www.showtix4u.com/events/25157. Those who prefer to pay with cash or by check can call the high school's main office at 518-623-2861 to make arrangements.
