Wrestling: Three remain in title hunts

ALBANY | Three Section VII wrestlers still have a shot at NYSPHSAA gold at the state wrestling championships. Saranac wrestlers Alex Clancy and Landen Smith, along with Beekmantown's Connor Bushey, won their round of 16 matches Feb. 24 at the MVP Arena in Albany to advance to the quarterfinal round later in the day. As the eighth seed, Clancy (35-5) scored a 9-3 decision at 132 over Landen Estus of Deposit-Hancock, and will next face top seed Brayden Fairbach of Mount Sinai (32-0) in the quarterfinals. Entering the 172 tournament as the fifth seed, Smith (40-3) scored a 17-2 tech fall over Payton Grabowski of Lyndonville, and will next face fourth seed Grayson Meak (38-3) of Cold Spring Harbor. In the heavyweight division, fourth-seeded Bushey (27-3) scored a 5-2 decision over Mason Dietz of Hendrick Hudson. His next match will be against fifth seed Kam Hills of Waverly (21-1). Six wrestlers were unable to advance in the championship bracket and will move to the consolation wrestlebacks, including Dom LaPier of AuSable Valley, who was able to force a 3-3 tie in regulation and made it to the final 10 seconds of sudden victory overtime before an illegal hold was called, giving his opponent the win at 160, 4-3. Ryan Devins of Saranac also suffered a late, 4-3 loss in his match at 188, while Saranac's Ashton Seymour was pinned at 126, Sawyer Bell of Beekmantown lost a 16-3 major decision at 138, Trent Snide-Hasselton of NAC was at the short end of a 10-2 decision at 189, and Trey McGee of NAC a 5-0 loss at 215.
