NBC's 'Today Show' to broadcast live from Lake George

LAKE GEORGE | The varied winter activities that Lake George offers will be depicted to an audience of millions on Monday, Feb. 20, as NBC television network's "Today Show" conducts a live broadcast at 8:30 a.m. from Lake George Village. The public has been invited to help form a crowd in the background of the live broadcast, Lake George Chamber of Commerce Marketing Director Amanda Metzger said Feb. 16. The live broadcast will be an episode of the show's "Today's Winter Escape" series, which has portrayed warm-weather getaway destinations across the U.S. The Feb. 20 broadcast from Lake George will be the only winter destination portrayed in the "Winter Escape" series, according to NBC affiliate station WNYT. The segment is to be broadcast live from the veranda of the Fort William Henry Hotel, with a vista of Lake George as the backdrop. To join the broadcast, people must arrive at the hotel by 7:30 a.m., Metzger said. Thursday afternoon, Chamber Executive Director Gina Mintzer said her staff was busy making signs for the upcoming event, and that they were "thrilled" and "excited" about the live broadcast of the longstanding NBC show, which routinely has nearly 3 million viewers. Metzger said Lake George Mayor Robert Blais, the longest-serving mayor in the U.S. presently in office, will be interviewed by WNYT's Chris Onorato, who will co-anchor the segment. Blais said he was pleased that the "Today Show" was promoting Lake George Village, predicting that it would have a "tremendous effect" on tourism. A precedent supports Blais's statement. A July 2009 live broadcast of the "Today Show" from Bolton's Sagamore Resort prompted their hotel room bookings to increase by 1,100 during the following 30 days, a Sagamore official reported a month after the event.
