Beekmantown boys, Saranac girls earn track sectional titles

PLATTSBURGH | It took all the events to determine a team winner in the Section VII boys indoor track and field championships Feb. 11, with Beekmantown scoring a two-point win over Saranac, 156.5-154.5. While winning the team title, the Eagles only had one individual victor, as Alexander Jock scored a win in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.08 seconds. "This race was one of my cleaner races of the year and I got a pretty good time," Jock said. "My goal is to beat the school record of 7.95. I am .12 away from it. I want to run states and nationals and get two more chances at it." Peru held the advantage in wins on the track, as Sawyer Shlitt scored a pair of wins in the 55 (6.59) and 300 (38.30), while Landon Pandolph scored an individual win in the 1,000 (2:57.14) while teaming with Michael Welc, Alex Watts, and Harrison Matthews in the 3,200 relay (9:12.89). Watts and Matthews also won the 1,600 relay along with teammates Ryan Squire and Owen Fuller (3:50.57). Oliver Lancto added a win in the high jump at 5'10". "I think the race went well with everyone pushing each other," said Pandolph. "Section VII has a lot of great competitors. It is nice to get pushed to prepare us for the post season here. Our goal is to go sub nine minutes. The season isn't done, so we have to keep pushing." "The 55 was a new PR for me so that was very nice," said Schlitt. "I've been working really hard lately to break the 6.6 barrier. My new goal is to break a 6.5 even." Saranac Lake dominated the other field events, as Liam Nobles won both the long (20-6.75) and triple jumps (40-0.75), and Mitchell Ellsworth winning the shot put (47-6). Landon Morris won the 600 for Saranac at 1:32.4, while Andrew Denial did the distance double for the Chiefs with wins in the 1,600 (4:46.38) and 3,200 (10:28.99). The PHS team of Donald Duttine, Simon Meyer, Trenton Griffiths, and Owen Mulligan scored a win in the 800 relay (1:43.76), with Seton Catholic's Gavin Bobbie winning the weight throw with a mark of 53-2. In the girls meet, Saranac scored 192 points, well ahead of second Beekmantown, who scored 129 points. Sarah Lavigne scored a win for the Chiefs in the 300 with a time of 44.43 seconds, along with a win in the 1,600 relay with teammates Eden LaPlante, Kaitlynn Rabideau, and Zoe Rainville in a time of 4:31.39. Laura Denial was also a distance double winner, taking the win in the 1,500 (5:11.99) and 3,000 (11:35.25). LaPlante, Rabideau, Maddy Wynnik and Olivia Davis combined to win the 800 relay for the Chiefs in 1:56.98. Sienna Boulds added a track win in the 1,000 (3:29.87), while in the field Grace Damiani won the high jump with a mark of 5'3" and Desiree Jean-Pierre won the shot put with a throw of 36'2". "I didn't feel like my high jump would be as good today because my legs kind of hurt," said Damiani. "I felt like a did pretty well. My high today was 5'3" and my PR is 5'4". My goal is 5'5"." "I did get first in shot put, but didn't PR," said Jean-Pierre. "I threw a 36. My goal is a 40. My goal for state qualifiers and states is to beat my PR." Ava McAuliffe picked up a pair of wins for Beekmantown in the 55 dash (7.48 seconds) and 600 1:45.69. "I told myself that I have to take today one race at a time," said McAuliffe. "When I won the 55 prelim and then the finals, I felt confident for the rest of my events." Lexi Clark also picked up a win for the Eagles in the triple jump (34'1.5"), while Sydney Palmer of Peru won the weight throw (40'5"), Gabriella Laundry of PHS the long jump (16'10.5"), and Isabelle Burroughs of Ticonderoga the 55 hurdles (9.89 seconds). "I got a new PR of over a foot in the long jump," said Laundry. "That is an inch away from qualifying for nationals. My goal for state qualifiers is to jump a 17 so I can go to nationals, but if not, keeping it up in the 16's." "I was glad that I didn't fall during my race today," said Burroughs. "I just ran as fast as I could. I didn't think about anything." The Peru team of Ophelia Breen, Maddy Welc, Lauren Davey, and Mackenzie Arnold won the 3,200 relay in 10:56.11.
