North Warren boys win rematch against Argyle, 86-43

ARGYLE | The roles of two powerhouse boys basketball teams were reversed Feb. 1 in their second 2023 league game, as North Warren overran Argyle 86-43 four weeks after they had lost to the Scots 53-56. Cougar coach James Cuyler said that in practice sessions held two days before the Adirondack League matchup, he challenged his athletes to focus and "play their game" against Argyle — and in response, they competed with determination. "Our guys worked together and played hard," Cuyler said. "They knew how important this game was." It was a key game to secure a decent seeding for the Adirondack League playoffs and for the Section II Class D tournament, he said. Although the final score gap was wide, Cougar fans were dismayed at the beginning of the game, when Arygle had an 8-0 lead due to their players hitting two three-pointers and a field goal. Cuyler said his team fought back after those baskets to post a 17-14 quarter. "Our guys just pounded the ball down to 'Coop,' and he was able to get us back in the game," Cuyler said, referring to center Cooper Morehouse. North Warren's defense refocused and hounded Argyle's top scorer Hunter Ingram, Cuyler said. Although Ingram has been scoring 27-30 points per game, the Cougars held him to five points Feb. 1 by guarding him wherever he was on the floor, Cuyler said. "Defensively, we were 'locked in' on Hunter," Cuyler said. The game was dubbed Senior Night, and two North Warren 12th graders led the charge: Morehouse and shooting guard Sean Evans shot 35 points combined. Evans led North Warren with 18 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists, while Morehouse followed with 17 points and seven rebounds. "'Coop' was dominant down low," Cuyler said. Junior forward Derrick Tyrell was next with 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, five steals, and one block. 7th-grade guard Semaj Cuyler had 13 points, three assists and two steals, while sophomore guard Wyatt Jennings contributed 12 points and two rebounds. Zach Hopper provided six points, six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Eli Horge had three points, three rebounds and one assist; while senior Angelo "Gino" Willette executed three rebounds and one assist, and junior Zachary Kramer scored a layup. Hopper, Evans, Morehouse and Willette were honored and applauded prior to the game. Cuyler said the Argyle game was not only important for seedings, but for his players' "psyches." "We let the last game against Argyle get away from us, and last night we wanted to make a statement that we are one top teams in the league and Section," he said. On Friday Feb. 3, the Cougars will be playing Fort Ann at 7:30 p.m. away, and at 11:30 a.m. Sunday Feb. 5, they will be competing against Mohonasen in a "showcase game" at Washington Avenue Armory in Albany. Mohonasen is a Class A school with about five times the enrollment of North Warren. Cuyler said that such tough competition would help them prepare for the post-season.
