Miss New York visits Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID | New York By Rail — and the Adirondacks — got a little extra publicity recently when Taryn Delanie Smith, as Miss New York 2022, visited the Lake Placid region in mid-January to support her work with the Miss America Organization. As Miss New York, Ms. Smith works with the New York By Rail Organization to promote train travel throughout the state. Recognizing the power of social media, the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) lost no time in inviting Smith — a platform communications expert — to the area. They contacted her last October and suggested she pay a visit. By late December, trip details were finalized and her itinerary had solidified, said Jane Hooper, ROOST communications manager. During her time in the area, Smith took a gondola to the top of Whiteface Mountain, visited businesses along Lake Placid's Main Street, experienced a snowshoe adventure at Henry's Woods, visited John Brown Farm, toured the Olympic Museum, visited the Herb Brooks Arena in the Olympic Center, and spoke with a number of local residents, business owners, tourism industry personnel and regional tourism officials. Smith then documented the highlights of her visit here on video and with photographs. That documentation, complemented by her written observations, will be shared on the Miss New York Instagram page and on the New York By Rail social media. Additionally, she will summarize her experiences in a blog written for NY By Rail, which will be shared in a weekly newsletter along with a video highlighting her experiences. As a professional social media content creator, Ms. Smith's proficiency with social media platforms has boosted the Miss America NY Instagram profile, doubling followers in her first six months. By sharing her experiences as Miss New York, she has brought her travels throughout the state to a wider audience. This trip highlights the ease with which visitors to the Adirondacks can take a train to Albany and from there, access the area by car, allowing travelers to learn more about the region. Hooper said ROOST often works with media professionals to help promote all that the Adirondack region has to offer. "ROOST undertakes a media relations strategy as part of its overall marketing effort," she said. "We work with travel writers, editors, and social media content creators to encourage story development about the Adirondack region, ultimately sharing information about travel to and within the area." When writers and social media professionals bring the Adirondacks to their respective audiences, they share the region's story, which adds to the overall understanding of the Adirondacks, added Hooper. These stories are then strengthened by ROOST's advertising campaigns, which encourage visitors to begin planning their own adventures in the Adirondacks.
