Unique N.Y. design for Lake Placid 2023 FISU medals

LAKE PLACID | A unique design concept used recycled glass for the 2023 bronze, silver and gold World University Games medals. The angular shape is meant to reflect angled mountain rock and ice forms of the Adirondack Park and Lake Placid region. The medals were made to highlight innovation and sustainable production. "While several designs were explored, the chosen concept felt the most unique and best represented the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games and New York State," FISU said of the medals they chose. The 2023 FISU design was created by faculty and students at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. The university and its Center for Glass Innovation and Inamori School of Engineering used recycled glass from Potsdam, St. Lawrence County. "The dimensional ice-inspired form of the medals departs from the traditional circular shape," FISU explained. "The use of recycled glass is a tribute to New York's long history of glassmaking and innovation. The Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games' logo is engraved on the glass medallion, which features rare earth elements europium oxide, dysprosium oxide and samarium oxide, allowing it to shift from light blue glass to a luminescent orange glow when exposed to ultraviolet light." Each medal's lanyard features the Lake Placid 2023 FISU logo with brush stroke accents. The dark-to-light blue gradient was designed to add depth and a wintry feel. More than 250 gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded during the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games.
