New Lake Placid hotel accommodates groups of all sizes

LAKE PLACID | Lark Hotels is opening Bluebird Lake Placid, the newest addition to their Bluebird by Lark portfolio, Jan. 11. Rob Blood founded Lark Hotels in 2012, with four small properties in the Northeast. Today, the company owns 52 properties across the country. Bluebird Hotels, a sister collection of boutique roadside lodges, account for nine of those properties, with more on the way. Blood said Lake Placid has been on his radar since he started the company. "We really try to focus on iconic destinations that people already know about," Blood said. "Lake Placid obviously has an international presence having hosted the Olympics and being such an amazing spot for outdoor adventures and activity." Blood said Lark tends to focus on opening hotels in highly leisure-focused destinations. "Most of our guests are traveling for pleasure rather than business, and Lake Placid just fits the mold," Blood said. The new hotel will be located at 2375 Saranac Ave., where the Lake Placid Summit Hotel used to be. "It's got these beautiful views of Mirror Lake, but also it's immediately adjacent to the downtown area," Blood said. Bluebird Lake Placid will stray from the Adirondack-themed design that is common in the area, focusing instead on an alpine aesthetic reflecting Scandinavian and Japanese design influences. "So [it is] more streamlined and minimalistic, but also sort of centered around elements like fire and earth," Blood said. "I think the design will certainly set it apart because we looked at it in a different way." Blood believes that in addition to adding high-quality lodging that will bring more people to town, Bluebird Lake Placid will benefit the Lake Placid community by creating local year-round jobs. The hotel is opening one section at a time throughout 2023. It will initially open with 14 employees, but by the time it is fully open, it will employ between 35 and 40 people. Blood said they have been working hard to hire locally, but are also bringing in support from other hotels to get things up and running smoothly. "I know that Lake Placid has somewhat of a housing challenge for workforce housing, so they will have to look more broadly than just Lake Placid itself," Blood said. "It's always best [to] run a local hospitality [with] local employees." The hotel was originally built with 127 rooms but only 90 parking spaces. After renovations and reconfiguring it will open with 90 rooms, with some staff housing on the property as well. The rooms range from small king-bedded rooms, to double queens, to queen bunk rooms for friends traveling together, to larger family suites, with a bunk room for the kids and king bed for the parents. Pricing will range from $119 to $889. "Every surface in the hotel has been touched," Blood said. "All the walls, ceilings, floors, bathrooms — everything's going to be fresh and new."
