Photo finish, new records highlight Montcalm Mile

A photo finish. An NCAA champion and runner-up. College All-Americans. An Olympic qualifier. A new course record. Three sub-4-minute miles. A record field. The 29th annual Montcalm Mile road race had all that and more July 4. "The Montcalm Mile has become a premier event," Fred Herbst, race director, said. "It's exceeded all expectations." The 2015 race sold out with 450 registers runners; 435 completing the course. They came from 23 states, Canada and the United Kingdom. Last year's race, which drew a then-record field, had 320 runners. Alex Brimstein, Joshua McDougal and Joseph Gentsch pulled away from the field in the final 400 meters, battling to the tape. In a thrilling finish, Brimstein edged ahead on the step to win in 3 minutes, 57.4 seconds. McDougal was second in 3:57.6 with Gentsch third in 3:59.2. "It was an amazing race," Herbst said. "The quality and depth of the field put the Montcalm Mile among the top road races in the country. To have the race decided by 2/10ths of a second and to have three runners under 4 minutes is incredible. Track fans are taking notice." The top three runners all earned All-America honors while in college — Brimstein at SUNY-Geneseo, McDougal at Liberty University and Gentsch at SUNY-New Paltz. McDougal won the 2007 NCAA Division I cross country national championship, beating Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp. Eleven runners broke 4:20. Lee Gabler, a Ticonderoga native now living in Charlottesville, Va., was the top local runner. He was sixth in 4:10.7. Lee Berube, a Putnam native now living in Syracuse, was seventh in 4:14.9. Berube, who has had limited training of late while finishing his doctorate degree studies, owns the Montcalm Mile record of 3:54. The women's race wasn't as close, but just as exciting. Defending champion Sara Dunham of Peru broke her own course record, winning in 4:39.7. She was followed by Brenna Clark of Ocean, N.J., in 4:57.9 and Danae Polsin of Rochester in 5:01.6. Other winners in the elite field were Heidi teRiele Karkoski of Ticonderoga in the women's masters race (age 40-49), Nancy Briskie of Schenectady in the women's veterans race (age 50 and older), Thomas Regan of Rochester in the men's masters race and William Venner of Granville in the men's veterans race. "The race grows in popularity every year," Herbst said. "We've had a record number of participants each of the last six years. The Montcalm Mile has become a great community tradition. It's rare to have an event that features elite athletes, recreational runners, children and families. It gets bigger and better every year." The Montcalm Mile was again held just prior to Ticonderoga's "Best Fourth in the North" parade. For the second year it offered $2,400 in prize money to attract top competitors. With a men's course record of 3 minutes, 54 seconds, the Montcalm Mile is believed to be the fastest mile anywhere in New York and Vermont, outside New York City. "Our goal is make the race one of the most competitive events in the North Country while remaining a fun, family-friendly race," Herbst said. The LaChute Road Runners has sponsored running events for decades in Ticonderoga while raising money to support youth running. The LaChute Road Runners has financed trips for the Ticonderoga High School cross country and track teams, purchased equipment for the scholastic harriers, provided monetary assistance to teens attending camps and awards the annual Duane Crammond Memorial Scholarship. The club has awarded $15,000 in college scholarships the past 11 years.
