Mineville VFW Bowling Lanes making major improvements

MINEVILLE | Mineville VFW Bowling Lanes is taking steps to guarantee that its bowling community will be able to not only enjoy the popular pastime, but also to ensure their experience is top-notch. "We did quite a bit of renovating," said Donna Fleury, the bowling alley manager since June of 2021. "We did some painting and spruced up the place to make it better and more inviting. In order to keep bowling alive up here in the Mineville area, we had to invest some money in upgrading things. It's all state-of-the-art now." The Mineville VFW is housed in an historic building that dates back to 1893, with the bowling alley being there as long as people remember, even Fleury herself unable to pinpoint the specific date it was installed. It's been a fixture in the area for decades, but like all well-used and loved machinery, it needed to be brought up to modern standards to allow the bowling alley to be around for future decades to come. "VWF members met and voted on renovations," said Fleury. "It was either that or we were going to end up closing at some point soon." Fleury explained that the pin setters are over 50 years old, and with age and repair comes the inevitable replacement. "The machines were getting worn out and breaking down more often," Fleury said. "We wanted to improve the bowler's experience here. With the new equipment, they should run much better and then customers, in turn, will have a much better experience without having to wait for lanes to get fixed." Fleury is no stranger to the bowling alley scene, having owned Ticonderoga's Adirondack Lanes alongside her brother, Don Gijanto, Jr. She knows the importance of a community having a facility that is well-cared for and a source of pride and that it can attract a lot of enthusiastic people to the sport. "There's a lot of people that can take advantage of it up here," she said. "We have a good core of people that participate in bowling leagues, plus we have a bunch of faithful customers that come for open bowling." Located at the bottom of the VFW building, the bowling alley has a small bar and bar menu, and hosts leagues. A larger hall upstairs in the building hosts weddings, fundraisers, and other social events. The bowling alley would be available as a rental for a bonus feature for those events. "And we can also host bachelor and bachelorette parties and adult birthday parties," Fleury added. An official ribbon cutting to celebrate the new and improved bowling alley will be announced soon. In the meantime, the bowling alley is back open and eager for bowlers to enjoy its facelift. "People enjoy the comradery, the competition, the fun, and getting out of the house one night a week," Fleury observed.
