Peru leaders and community rally to make holidays brighter

PERU | Each year, Town of Peru officials, businesses and community members unite in the holiday spirit to make sure no family goes without. For the past 12 years, the growing community initiative led by Town Supervisor Brandy McDonald has helped provide meals, hope and goodwill to nearly 600 families between Thanksgiving and Christmas, along with thousands of giflts for families and children facing hardship with the December holidays. After fundraising in the fall and a massive shopping trip, organizers were able to provide food for 60 families through the Peru JCEO Outreach Center for Thanksgiving and are expecting to help even more later this month. The giving spirit continued straight through Thanksgiving Day as McDonald joined forces with the staff at Big Lots in Plattsburgh to take advantage of massive toy discounts for a major head start on the December toy drive. What started as a small effort helping 10-15 kids has grown to help more than 150 last year with another 97 signed up so far this year. Both monetary donations and gifts continue to be accepted as the number of requests for help continue to climb and more than $3,000 raised so far. "Like every year, I can't thank everyone enough that gives to make this happen," McDonald said. "We truly live in an unbelievable community…You all are the true meaning of Christmas."
