North Country Manufacturing Day sees large crowds

PLATTSBURGH | On Nov. 16 the 10th annual North Country Manufacturing Day was held at Clinton Community College (CCC) and the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (IAM). The event connects high school students with local manufacturers. Around 500 high school students from Clinton, Essex, and Frankin Counties show up to participate in this event despite the snowy weather. Fourteen of the area's leading employers participated in this event to help inspire the next generation of manufacturers. Students were challenged to escape manufacturing-themed escape rooms, use a flight simulator, try virtual welding, interact with various types of robots, take a tour of the IAM and CCC campus, and more during this event. "We're feeling really good about this year's event. It was unfortunate with the weather today and the snow but we were estimating about 700 students to attend- 9th through 12th graders- and we're thinking we got closer to about a little over 500 students, which is still an amazing feat for us. It's our 10th year doing it, and it's by far the biggest number of students we've been able to have participate so that in itself is a huge accomplishment," Amber Douglass, vice president for Strategic Operations at E.T.S, said. North Country Manufacturing Day was created to inspire the next generation of manufacturers to ensure the prosperity of the region. This day also allows local employers to showcase what modern manufacturing is about while highlighting career opportunities that exist in the manufacturing industry and the products that are made right in the students' backyards. "You know, we really wanted to encourage the younger students to start thinking about a career in manufacturing and reach them earlier than 11th and 12th graders," Douglass added, "and show them that there's so many pathways to get a career in manufacturing. You can go to CV-TEC, or when you graduate high school enter the workforce right away, or graduate high school and go to Clinton, or go to a four-year school." Douglass mentioned that there are many ways to establish a career in manufacturing, which is why days like North Country Manufacturing Day are so important. They educate the students on the options they have for after high school. Beta Technologies, Camso, Agri-Mark, Salerno, Schluter Systems, Upstone Materials, Vapor Stone Rail Systems, Norsk Titanium, Sylvamo, Nova Bus, CV-TEC, New York State Police, 3DRPD, Alstom, MRP Solutions, ETS, and CCC all participated in the event. The Strand Center for The Arts participated as well, manning one of the escape rooms they helped print the puzzles for. "This was a great test this year of how we can better this event, and I think that we can just grow from here," concluded Douglass.
