Fort Ticonderoga receives award

TICONDEROGA | Fort Ticonderoga's major accomplishment for 2022, the completion of the restoration of the Pell Pavilion, was recently honored with a prestigious Excellence Award from the Preservation League of NYS. "The Pavilion at Fort Ticonderoga is an important part of that site's history – but for too long it was neglected," said Preservation League President Jay DiLorenzo. "We're excited to recognize the transformation of the Pavilion with an Excellence Award this year, and we applaud the leadership at Fort Ticonderoga for their vision in bringing this building back to life." The Pavilion Restoration was "America's Fort's" first phase of a $70 million dollar campaign and one of the most aggressive expansions in its history. The 1826-built Pavilion was brought back and infused with fresh blood with the assistance of $9 million dollars, a combination of public and generous private funds; nearly $3 million in state assistance and $6 million in private donations. The Preservation League also cited the renovation as a "concrete example of historic preservation as economic development" by enhancing job opportunities. The Preservation League of New York State's Excellence Award highlights that Fort Ticonderoga, and specifically the Pavilion restoration project, acknowledges the institution's commitment to the highest standard in historic preservation. Restoration highlights included the removal of collapsed floor framing and a fallen plaster ceiling caused by multiple roof leaks, with a new roof installed designed to sustain increased rainfall. Major design challenges included the severe level of deterioration and the need to convert a seasonal building into a sustainable year-round facility while preserving its historic fabric and character. "Today the Pavilion stands as a vibrant crown jewel in the Ticonderoga experience, offering a premium venue space for meetings and weddings as well as providing expanded visitors experiences which continue to grow Fort Ticonderoga as one of the premier cultural destinations in America," said Fort Ticonderoga President and CEO Beth Hill.
